  • Big Sky Conference Stock Index: Quarter Pole

    Rank Team Record Preseason Comment
1 Weber State 1-2 3 No team has been as impressive as Weber State so far. 25 points given up again FBS opponents Nevada and San Diego State. If they can get more consistent offensively, they are going to be a force.
2 Montana 2-1 4 Montana at this point has played as good as any BSC team as a collective whole. The Defense has been stifling in the second half of all its games, including last night against Oregon.
3 Cal Davis 2-1 2 Jury is a bit out. Needed a gift win against USD, but there is no doubt that aside from EWU there is no more balanced offense in the Big Sky. Hard to know at this point where they are defensively against two fairly soft FCS programs.
4 Northern Arizona 2-1 6 If there is a reason that NAU wins the conference title, it'll because of 95 year old Case Cookus at quarterback. Their schedule isn't that revealing so far, but were competitive against Arizona, and dominated Missouri State at home.
5 Montana State 2-1 5 I like to troll, but in three games Casey Baumann is 36-74 for 405 yards and 1 Touchdown. Their saving grace has been the running game, but if Ifanse is dinged up that doesn't bode well for the meat of the BSC schedule. Bryce Sterk is one of the early leaders for Conference DPOY with 19 tackles and 5 sacks early on.
6 Eastern Washington 1-2 1 Eastern is going to struggle unless they can find a way to stop teams throwing the football. They have given up in 3 games 900 yards of passing and 11 TD's. They are giving up 40 plus a game so far. Doesn't matter how much you can score, eventually you'll have to stop someone. They couldn't on Saturday.
7 Sacramento State 2-1 11 If SS finishes in the top 5 in conference, much like NAU it is going to be because of their QB. Kevin Thomson has completed 73 passes for 927 yards and rushed for another 140 through three games.
8 Idaho State 1-1 7 We know less about ISU than any team in the conference at this point. They have a DII and a FBS game at this point under their belt. They were lights out against the DII and terrible against the FBS. Go figure.
9 Portland State 1-2 10 I think this might be low for PSU, because Barnum is capable of figuring crap out, because they have played two FBS schools mixed with the lone Canadian college football program (DII Simon Fraser). Hard to really know what PSU has, but they didn't look very good for about a half against Simon Fraser and looked out of sorts last night Boise.
10 Southern Utah 1-2 12 A loss against an FBS school (UNLV) and another against a ranked FCS school seems reasonable. They were in a dog fight against SFA last night and prevailed by the hair of their chin in OT. As with the above two, it is really super hard to know precisely where they are at.
11 Cal Poly 1-2 9 I say this, I don't think anyone is going to want to play CP this year in conference. Their run game is potent and Jalen Hamler seems more capable of throwing the football. They aren't going to stop anyone, but they might not be stopped either. They get credit for putting up yards and points against Weber, but sooner or later they are going to have to win games.
12 Idaho 1-2 8 Idaho looked terrible against Penn State (who wouldn't), terrible against Central Washington (struggling for 3 quarters) and good against Wyoming. Their offense is putrid and it'll only be saved by Petrino's ability to get Cotton the football.
13 Northern Colorado 0-3 13 Said this a few weeks ago, this has to be Earnest Collins last year in Greely. They looked moderately good against SJSU (a FCS school on steriods) and completely overmatched the past two weeks. A loss against Washington State isn't awful, but the 50-0 loss last night against Sac was probably the worst showing of any BSC team in the early season.
    Notes:
    - Looking at the future schedules, we'll know very little about Eastern and Montana State until the middle of October. Meanwhile, I think we'll know a ton about Cal Davis who plays NDSU, UM and CP in consecutive weeks.
    - As noted before this unbalanced conference schedule is going to place teams in the upper half of the conference rankings for a lot of the year. Even now at the quarter pole and some sketchy showings I'd put a likely finish of EWU-MSU (1-2) as pretty high. WSU is the most likely to break that pair up, with NAU and Montana trailing them.

    Most likely to Rise:
Eastern/MSU: Their schedules are absolutely brutally soft, and should be five and four win teams by the time Eastern travels to Missoula in late October.

    Most like to fall:
Sac State: Face Fresno State, Eastern, MSU and Montana in consecutive weeks. That is as brutal four week stretch as anyone in the conference this year and still have UCD, NAU and WSU on the schedule to follow in late October and Early november.
